Welcome back, Rhiannon and Francesco! We can’t bring them to the Amphitheater, so they are inviting us to come join them online from Ireland, where they will be performing a concert especially for Chautauqua while having an evening beverage with us as we talk about music and art.

Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy award-winning string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, in which she plays banjo and fiddle. You may have first fallen in love with Rhiannon through her solo debut, the Grammy-nominated album Tomorrow Is My Turn, which masterfully blends American musical genres like gospel, jazz, blues, and country, to showcase her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess. Giddens’ recent televised performances include The Late Show, Austin City Limits, Later…with Jools Holland, and both CBS Saturday and Sunday Morning, among numerous other notable media appearances. Defined as a “musical alchemist” by the press, Francesco Turrisi performs on the piano, accordion, harpsichord, organ, various lutes, cello, banjo, frame and goblet drums. He has released five albums and is a member of the celebrated early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata, having performed at the most important classical music festivals and Europe and around the world. Since 2017 he has been collaborating with Giddens on duo projects that combine music from the Mediterranean with music from the African diaspora in the Americas. In 2019 Giddens and Turrisi released their critically acclaimed album there is no Other.

Cocktails, Concerts & Conversations is the CHQ Assembly performing arts series intended to connect people through music, theater and dance. Mondays will feature Opera artists and be hosted by Chautauqua Opera Company General and Artistic Director Steven Osgood; Tuesdays will feature Chautauqua Dance and be hosted by Artistic Advisor Sasha Janes; Wednesdays will feature Theater artists and be hosted by Chautauqua Theater Company Artistic Director Andrew Borba; Thursdays will feature soloists in recital and be hosted by Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra Music Director Rossen Milanov, and Fridays will feature popular entertainment artists and be hosted by Vice President of Performing and Visual Arts Deborah Sunya Moore. We hope this panoply of performances will lift your spirits and invite you to bring those spirits (ones that fill both your heart and your glass) to join us at 5:00 p.m. on most weekdays through the summer. Be it with cocktail or mocktail, come for conversation. Every artist on this series is eager to welcome you into the conversation — see you there!
