“Off the Walls” exhibition runs June 23–August 20. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. “Off the Walls” is an exhibition featuring a dozen contemporary artists who create small sculptures, and are at the peak of their careers, showing nationally and internationally. As the title implies, all works will be hung from the ceiling or displayed on pedestals. Works in wood, glass, clay, metal, and concrete will be featured. “In the Garden” Exhibition – July 24-Aug 21

“In the Garden” exhibition runs July 24-Aug 21. Opening Reception July 24, 3-5pm. Inspired by what we learn from the garden, this exhibition reflects the complicated histories and often tenuous futures of flowers and food. It also digs at our relationship to them, as those charged with tending the garden. Through media ranging from still life painting to glass pâte de verre, these works tackle diverse subjects such as climate change, indigenous plant knowledge, growth/decay, and tulip mania. Join us in Strohl Art Center on July 24 from 5 – 6pm for a panel discussion with exhibiting artists. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Kay Hardesty Logan Foundation. The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry is presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church. At the church’s 78th General Convention in June 2015, he was elected to a nine-year term in this role and installed in November of that year; he serves as The Episcopal Church’s chief pastor, spokesperson, and president and chief executive officer.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Curry has been a prophetic leader, particularly in the areas of racial reconciliation, climate change, evangelism, immigration policy, and marriage equality. The animating vision and message of his ministry is Jesus of Nazareth and his way of radical, sacrificial love, and he regularly reminds Episcopalians they are “the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.”

Bishop Curry was ordained a priest in 1978 and served parishes in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland until his 2000 election as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He graduated with high honors from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. Bishop Curry is the author of five books and a regular guest on national and international media outlets.

Born in the United States to immigrant parents from China, Amy Tan rejected her mother’s expectations that she become a doctor and concert pianist. She chose to write fiction instead. In keeping with her love of science in the wild and childhood love of doodling, Tan — who serves on the board of the American Bird Conservancy — took up nature journal sketching in 2016, and now the beloved writer best known for The Joy Luck Club returns to the Amphitheater stage for a week dedicated to “Wonder and Awe — A Week Celebrating Chautauqua’s Sesquicentennial.” She’ll discuss her latest work, The Backyard Bird Chronicles, and the wonder and awe inspired by the natural world.

Tan is the author of The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God’s Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The Bonesetter’s Daughter, Saving Fish from Drowning, and The Valley of Amazement, all New York Times bestsellers, as well as two children’s books and the nonfiction books The Opposite of Fate and Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir. Her work has been translated into 35 languages and adapted for film, television and opera.

For her work, Tan has been nominated for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the International Orange Prize. She is also the recipient of the Commonwealth Gold Award, the 2005 Common Wealth Award of Distinguished Service, the 2021 Carl Sandburg Literary Award, and other honors. In March 2022 she was voted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She was also awarded the 2021 National Humanities Medal by President Joe Biden in a ceremony at the White House.

Tan’s Chautauqua presentation coincides with “Amy Tan’s Backyard Birds,” an exhibition of her nature journals and sketches on display from June 8 to Aug. 25, 2024, at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York.

Miller Cottage Tours

Miller Cottage Tours: Join Clara Miller for a 30-minute tour of the first floor of the historic Miller-Edison Cottage. The cottage was built in 1875 for the co-founder and first president of the Institution, Lewis Miller, an inventor and businessman from Akron, Ohio. President Ulysses S. Grant visited the property that year. Miller’s daughter, Mina, also spent summers at the cottage with her husband, Thomas Alva Edison. The Swiss-style structure on lakefront Miller Park is an excellent example of “stick style” architecture popular in the late 1800s. Considered one of the earliest prefabricated structures in America with components produced and assembled in Akron, the cottage has gone through numerous renovations, expansions and systems upgrades over the past 130 years.

The Lewis Miller Cottage was designated a National Historic Landmark on July 4, 1966.

About Your Guide:
Clara Miller is a cultural landscape historian and lifelong Chautauquan. She graduated in 2020 from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a bachelor’s degree in Architectural History. Clara moved to Scotland in 2021 to complete a master’s program in Gender History at the University of Glasgow. While pursuing her degree, Clara worked for the National Trust for Scotland, designing and giving tours in historic house museums.

Clara’s interest in the intersections of history, landscape, and gendered experience is linked to her early exposure to Chautauqua’s richly historical community and grounds. Her master’s research centered on the intertwined history of hegemonic femininity and landscape gardens.

Dr. Sunita Puri

Dr. Sunita Puri is a nationally recognized palliative medicine physician and writer who has served as the Medical Director of the Palliative Medicine Program at USC and the Program Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts. She completed medical school and residency training in internal medicine at the University of California San Francisco followed by a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Stanford. She is the author of That Good Night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour, a critically acclaimed literary memoir examining her journey to the practice of palliative medicine, and her quest to help patients and families redefine what it means to live and die well in the face of serious illness. A graduate of Yale University and the recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship, her writing has appeared in the New Yorker, Atlantic, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Tricycle, Slate, and the Journal of the American Medical Association.. She and her work have been featured in the Atlantic, People Magazine, PBS’ Christian Amanpour Show, NPR, the Guardian, BBC, India Today, and Literary Hub. She is passionate about the ways that the precise and compassionate use of language can empower patients and physicians to have the right conversations about living and dying. In November, she will be the Director of the Hospital-Based Palliative Medicine Service at the University of California, Irvine, where she will also be an associate professor of medicine.

As part of the Oliver Archives Center’s 2024 Heritage Lecture Series celebrating Chautauqua’s history and its 150th anniversary, Timothy Binkley will present “John H. Vincent: The Pillar and Pillars of Chautauqua”. In this presentation, Binkley will share the surprising story of how Chautauqua co-founder and Chancellor Vincent received the title “Pillar of the Chautauqua educational movement.” Binkley will then explore the relationship between Rev. Vincent’s life experiences and Chautauqua’s four pillars. To conclude, he will name two other historical pillars of Chautauqua that make the picture more complete.

Tim Binkley is a public historian, member of the Academy of Certified Archivists, and minister in the Church of the Brethren. He is a graduate of Defiance College (Defiance, Ohio), Bethany Theological Seminary (Richmond, Indiana), and Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio). His career includes leadership positions at The Henry Ford Museum (Dearborn, Michigan), Onekama Church of the Brethren (Onekama, Michigan), United Theological Seminary (Dayton, Ohio), and Perkins School of Theology (Dallas, Texas). In 2020 Binkley joined the faculty of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, as Head of Special Collections and Archives and Assistant Professor of Library Science.

Old First Night

Old First Night is Chautauqua’s birthday party, and all are invited!

In the early years of Chautauqua, the season’s first night was not in late June but early August. Therefore, Old First Night (OFN) is a celebration of the original first night of the season at Chautauqua.

This event begins with music from Thursday Morning Brass at 6 p.m., followed by vespers and a traditional Chautauqua salute called the Drooping of the Lilies, which honors Chautauquans who are no longer with us. The program continues with music and audience participation events, and all generations are involved, including Children’s School and Boys’ and Girls’ Club. The program concludes with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” accompanied by the Massey Memorial Organ.

After the program, all are invited to share in birthday cupcakes just outside the Amphitheater.

Squonk: Brouhaha

Squonk creates joyful, boisterous outdoor spectacles by fusing fantastical visual design, playful staging, and high-energy original music. Led by Co-Artistic Directors Jackie Dempsey and Steve O’Hearn, Squonk presents Brouhaha, a riotous romp featuring the Squonkcordion, an enormous musical instrument the audience gets to play. The New York Times called Squonk “ingenious, hallucinatory and hypnotic.” Experience the joy of community and the power of live music in this immersive outdoor spectacle bursting with rollicking music and dazzling imagery.

Squonk will help Chautauqua celebrate its sesquicentennial with music, puppetry, and performance outdoors on a pop-up stage in Bestor Plaza. On Sunday, watch them perform; on Monday join them for a street puppet-making workshop (times and locations TBA), and on Tuesday, celebrate Chautauqua with a birthday edition of Brouhaha: participatory entertainment for kids and adults alike. The Tuesday performance on Bestor plaza immediately follows the Old First Night ceremony, striking up outside of the Amphitheater in Odland Plaza and then progressing to Bestor Plaza for the show itself. Performances are 30 minutes with a 30 minute backstage tour following.

Clark took the helm at StoryCorps as CEO in 2022, advancing the award-winning organization’s mission: to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. It is this work and this mission that brings Clark to the Amphitheater stage for a week dedicated to “Wonder and Awe — A Week Celebrating Chautauqua’s Sesquicentennial,” as she contemplates on the power of storytelling to inspire wonder and awe in listeners, readers and viewers.

Prior to joining StoryCorps in early 2022, Clark was vice president for news and civic dialogue at WHYY in Philadelphia. There, she led the station’s news operation across all platforms and was at the forefront of expanding and diversifying its audiences and outreach to communities. Her innovative approaches to collaborating with grassroots information providers garnered national recognition. In addition, Clark worked with teams to grow revenue and build membership while amplifying the station’s branding and positioning. As managing editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer prior to joining WHYY, Clark was a member of both the executive and newsroom leadership team and led the paper to a 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.

A contributing trainer and mentor for the Maynard Institute, Clark has served on the board of the News Leaders Association and the advisory board for the Arthur W. Page Center for Integrity in Public Communication.

Miller-Edison Cottage Shipman Garden Tour and Q&A: Hosted by the Bird, Tree and Garden Club of Chautauqua, with support from Betsy Burgeson, Supervisor of Gardens at Chautauqua, these weekly tours of the Ellen Biddle Shipman garden at the historic Miller-Edison Cottage are a favorite summertime experience. The cottage was the home of Chautauqua co-founder Lewis Miller and his family. His daughter, Mina Miller Edison, purchased the home in 1920. Mina and Ellen Biddle Shipman developed plans for the garden just two years after Mina purchased the home. As the President of the Chautauqua Bird and Tree Club (Bird, Tree, Garden Club’s original name), Mina practiced what she preached, creating a refuge for birds and and the stately trees they sang in.
