“Off the Walls” Exhibition – June 23–August 20

“Off the Walls” exhibition runs June 23–August 20. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. “Off the Walls” is an exhibition featuring a dozen contemporary artists who create small sculptures, and are at the peak of their careers, showing nationally and internationally. As the title implies, all works will be hung from the ceiling or displayed on pedestals. Works in wood, glass, clay, metal, and concrete will be featured. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Brenda and Larry Thompson. Curated by Judy Barie.

Ashley Eliza Williams, born in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia, makes work about interspecies communication and alternative languages found in the natural world. Her work is “driven by a deep sense of wonder and curiosity about the non-human world.” Her paintings and sculptural investigations into the sentience of nature connect with Chautauqua Institution’s week seven theme of Wonder and Awe. The Rev. Kate Braestrup

The daughter of a foreign correspondent, Kate Braestrup spent her childhood in Algiers, New York City, Paris, Bangkok, Washington, DC and Sabillasville, Maryland. Educated at the Parsons School of Design, the New School and Georgetown University, Kate has her master’s degree from Bangor Theological Seminary and received an honorary doctorate from Unity College in 2010.

Kate married Trooper James Andrew “Drew” Griffith in 1985. Trooper Griffith was killed in the line of duty in 1996 in a car accident, leaving Kate a widow with four young children.

In 1997, Kate entered Seminary and was ordained as a community minister in 2004. Since 2001, she has served as chaplain to the Maine Warden Service, joining game wardens as they search the wild lands and fresh waters of Maine for those who have lost their way, and offering comfort to those who wait for the ones they love to be rescued.

Kate is the bestselling author of the award-winning Here If You Need Me (Little-Brown, 2006) named one of TIME Magazine’s ten best books of 2006, and Marriage and Other Acts of Charity (Little-Brown, 2009), Beginner’s Grace (Simon and Schuster, 2010) and Anchor & Flares (Little-Brown, 2015). Her work has appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times Sunday Magazine, More, O (the Oprah Magazine) and Good Housekeeping. She has told stories for PBS’ The Moth, gave a TED talk, and she is a sought-after public speaker around the country and abroad.

Kate is married to artist Simon van der Ven and between them, they have a total of six children and eight grandchildren.

Thomas Chatterton Williams

Thomas Chatterton Williams is a staff writer at The Atlantic and the author of Losing My Cool and Self-Portrait in Black and White. He is a visiting professor of humanities and senior fellow at the Hannah Arendt Center at Bard College, a 2022 Guggenheim fellow, and a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. To open a Chautauqua Lecture Series week examining “Our Greatest Challenges (That We Can Actually Do Something About),” Williams will survey the current American conversation on race, share how he has evolved in his conception of race and societal division, and provide his perspective on creating a space for productive conversation and bridge-building.

Williams was previously a contributing writer at The New York Times Magazine and a columnist at Harper’s. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, the London Review of Books, Le Monde and many other places, and has been collected in The Best American Essays and The Best American Travel Writing. He has received support from New America, Yaddo, MacDowell, and The American Academy in Berlin, where he is a member of the board of trustees.

Williams’ next book, Nothing Was the Same, will be published by Knopf.
