“Passion for Paper” exhibition runs June 23-July 21. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. Enjoy this exhibition featuring seven talented artists who work with paper. Working with paper requires a special set of skills and a steady hand as it is known to be unforgiving. Passion for Paper, a thematic exhibition, features seven talented artists that have mastered their techniques and personal styles, resulting in a series of beautiful and intelligent works. Abstraction and realism will be featured in the Main Gallery, including a large hanging installation. Curated by Judy Barie.

“The Art of Robert Villamagna” exhibition runs June 23-July 18. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. Robert Villamagna grew up in the Rust Belt in Ohio and started making art as a young child with materials he found in his home. He now passionately works with colorful found materials, especially items that have language, show use and are rusted. These discarded metal items breathe life into his colorful sculptures and two-dimensional wall pieces. A strong sense of hidden messages is paramount in his work. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Friends of CVA. Curated by Judy Barie.

“Off the Walls” exhibition runs June 23–August 20. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. “Off the Walls” is an exhibition featuring a dozen contemporary artists who create small sculptures, and are at the peak of their careers, showing nationally and internationally. As the title implies, all works will be hung from the ceiling or displayed on pedestals. Works in wood, glass, clay, metal, and concrete will be featured. The Rev. Canon Leyla King

The Rev. Canon Leyla King is a Palestinian-American Episcopal priest and writer, an advocate of small churches, and a wife and mother. She is a founding member of both Palestinian Anglicans and Clergy Allies (www.palestiniananglicans.org) and The Small Churches Big Impact Collective (smallchurchesbigimpact.org). Currently, she serves as the Canon for Mission in Small Congregations for the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

Leyla writes about her experiences as a Palestinian, a clergywoman and a mother at thankfulpriest.com and her first book, a generational memoir, is due on shelves in spring 2025.

Karl Hofmann

Karl Hofmann is the president and CEO of Population Services International (PSI), a nonprofit health enterprise working in over 40 countries worldwide, with programs in family planning and reproductive health, malaria, water and sanitation, HIV, and non-communicable diseases. PSI works in partnership with local governments, ministries of health and local organizations to create health solutions and health systems that are built to last.

Prior to joining PSI, Hofmann was a career American diplomat. He served as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Togo, executive secretary of the Department of State, and deputy chief of mission (senior career diplomat) at the U.S. Embassy in Paris. He also served on President Clinton’s National Security Council staff.

Hofmann is vice-chair of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, a director of the One Acre Fund, a member of the CSIS Commission on American Health Security, and of the American Academy of Diplomacy. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and the National Defense University.

Miller-Edison Cottage Shipman Garden Tour and Q&A

Miller-Edison Cottage Shipman Garden Tour and Q&A: Hosted by the Bird, Tree and Garden Club of Chautauqua, with support from Betsy Burgeson, Supervisor of Gardens at Chautauqua, these weekly tours of the Ellen Biddle Shipman garden at the historic Miller-Edison Cottage are a favorite summertime experience. The cottage was the home of Chautauqua co-founder Lewis Miller and his family. His daughter, Mina Miller Edison, purchased the home in 1920. Mina and Ellen Biddle Shipman developed plans for the garden just two years after Mina purchased the home. As the President of the Chautauqua Bird and Tree Club (Bird, Tree, Garden Club’s original name), Mina practiced what she preached, creating a refuge for birds and and the stately trees they sang in.

Daniel Ramírez

Daniel Ramírez (Ph.D., Duke University; B.A., Yale College) is Associate Professor of American Religions at Claremont Graduate University where he chairs the Religion Department. He has previously taught at the University of Michigan and Arizona State University. His research interests include religious history of the Americas, with a focus on migration, transnationalism, and the borderlands. His award-winning book, Migrating Faith: Pentecostalism in the United States and Mexico in the Twentieth Century (University of North Carolina Press, 2015), follows the trajectory of Pentecostalism in the US and Mexico, examining this through the prism of migration, culture, and music. His over 25 publications include a recent co-edited book (with Lloyd Barba and Andrea Johnson), Oneness Pentecostalism: Race, Culture, and Gender (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2023). Dr. Ramírez has lectured widely in Latin America and the Caribbean and has served as an Observer of the International Roman Catholic-Pentecostal Dialogue. His scholarly associations include the Red de Investigadores del Fenómeno Religioso en México, the American Academy of Religion, and the Society for Pentecostal Studies. From 2019-2022 he served as president of the American Society of Church History, the nation’s oldest religious history guild.

African American Heritage House Lecture: Helen Bond

Helen Bond is a University Professor in the School of Education at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and the former director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment. She is also a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar to India, co-chair of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and executive council member to the Center for Women, Gender, & Global Leadership at Howard University. She is also the School of Education Faculty Liaison to the Center for African Studies at Howard University.

With a Ph.D. in human development and a background in transformative teacher education, education for sustainable development, and peace studies, she published “Making Peace With Children” in Peace Studies for Sustainable Development in Africa in Springer publishing house’s prestigious series “Advances in African Economic, Social and Political Development.” Bond has served as an expert in these areas in over 20 countries including Austria, Bangladesh, Canada, Cuba, Ethiopia, including the Somali region of Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Liberia, South Africa, South Korea, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Bond was inducted in the 2020 Alumni Hall of Fame by The Ohio State University-Mansfield for her international work in education and human development.

Chautauqua Theater Company presents Birthday Candles

Ernestine Ashworth contemplates her cosmic insignificance on her 17th birthday, a feeling that follows her through the swift passage of time. In the blink of an eye, she reaches her 18th birthday, hurtles toward her 41st, accelerates into her 70th, and glides into her 101st. Birthday Candles is a heartfelt and humorous story that guides the audience through the significant, challenging, and remarkable moments as time inexorably marches on. One ordinary woman’s life is measured by the simple tradition of baking a birthday cake.

Originally developed as a New Play Workshop during the 2017 season and then performed around the country, Chautauqua will finally mount its own full production of Birthday Candles. What a fitting way to open CTC’s mainstage season and celebrate Chautauqua Institution’s 150th birthday!

This production may not be suitable for youth under 8.

CVA Lecture Series: Elizabeth Mooney, School of Art Faculty: “Exploring the Concept of Place”

Elizabeth Mooney is a visual artist that explores the construct of landscape through painting, printmaking, and kinetic sculpture. She received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from California College of the Arts, and her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston. Elizabeth was a Visual Artist Fellow at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, and has received grants from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, the Sustainable Arts Foundation, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Recent exhibitions include Q20 at the Davis Museum, a solo exhibition at Montserrat College, and a solo exhibition at LaMontagne Gallery in Boston.  Elizabeth is currently an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
