Closing of the 144th Assembly, Three Taps of the Gavel Address

...of my first season: Celebrating my first Old First Night as President and running with my partner Peter and colleague Deborah Sunya Moore through the streets of Chautauqua to mark our birthday; Perhaps one of my favorites, a group of 5-year-olds from Children’s School coming to the President’s Cottage for “Kids Government” day with a list of “demands” — not requests — including that I appoint a kid co-President and create a mythical monsters zoo;...

Prayers and Thoughts on the Equinox

Periods of transition often inspire us to reflect on that which we leave behind and the new experience ahead. As we welcome the arrival of the fall season on this day of equal day and night time, I find myself reflecting on that ideal of equality and what it means for our society and the mission of Chautauqua. It conjures memories of our dialogue during the 2017 season on issues of balance, on the nature...

As We Look Ahead, a Collective Wisdom and Hope

There is a new addition to the hallway leading to my office door in the Colonnade, a tribute to all the men — and I look forward to the day we will say “men and women”! — who have been fortunate enough to serve as president of the Institution. Elevating Civil and Interfaith Dialogue in Communities: Finding Common Ground in an Age of Discord

...in the process of inviting our community members to help us frame the next strategic plan for Chautauqua. In conversations over the past couple months and, indeed, over the past year since I assumed the role as Chautauqua’s 18th president, we have been attempting to understand our distinctive role in society, to develop a much more precise awareness of what the world is calling us to do today. Our founders — and your fellow Ohioans...

This is the place

At Chautauqua, we believe strongly in the power of play, reflection and discovery to reinforce or even catalyze the experience of learning. That’s why so many of our educational offerings — across all our programming pillars, for all generations — emphasize creativity, movement, introspection or social engagement as essential components. While still very much part of the world, Chautauqua represents a kind of separation from day-to-day life, a separation that permits space for exploring something...
