Mobility Scooter Safety and Use Guidelines
Mobility Device Safe Operations Guidelines
It is the responsibility of the user/operator of any mobility device to keep these safety procedures in mind:
- Users operate the device according to the safety instructions provided. Manuals for each of the devices are available at the following links and provide specific safety and operation instructions for each of the devices:
- Pride Mobility – Gogo Sports 4-wheel Scooter Manual
- Pride Mobility – Victory 10 Scooter Manual
- Afikim Scooters – S4 Wide Seat Tandem Scooter Manual
- Users are highly encouraged to read the “Consumer Safety Guide” for scooters made available by the manufacturers of our Pride Mobility scooters for key safety tips.
- Users must assess and affirm in writing that they are capable of operating the device in a safe manner.
- Users should not exceed the current speed limit for mobility devices (6 MPH). Slower speeds will often be more appropriate, especially when navigating hills and/or roads with a vertical and/or horizontal slope.
- Headlights must be used when operating the scooter between dusk and dawn.
- Users should not allow anyone who has not been designated as a user on the rental form to operate the device. All users must be 18 years or older. Any exceptions must be approved in writing by an Institution representative.
- Mobility devices are expected to share roads and pathways with other pedestrians. Mobility devices share the right-of-way with pedestrians.
- Mobility devices should follow all posted traffic signs (e.g., devices should come to a full-stop at a stop sign).
- Only one person may use the mobility device at a time. At no point should the operator allow passengers, including children. The only exception to this rule is a tandem scooter (grey color).
- Devices must not be parked in roadways, on sidewalks or in any other location where they might interfere with the entry or exit locations of a building or structure.
- Please make sure that you only use the device assigned to you. Many scooters look alike. Please check the scooter number before each use.
- Please disclose to Chautauqua Information Center or the Athenaeum Hotel details about damage to the device, accidental or otherwise. Emergencies should always be reported to Campus Safety by calling 716-357-6225.
- Please cease use of the device if there are any operational or safety issues.
Daily Care & Use of Mobility Scooters
- Scooters must be covered with the full device cover when there is any possibility of rain
- Tiller covers (small cover that goes over the handle mechanism) must be used anytime there is rain. Moisture can damage the electronics of the device and may result in high repair fees for the renter.
- It is highly recommended that devices be charged overnight. Failure to charge the device appropriately may result in the device being inoperable. If a staff member is required to help with a stranded uncharged device, a $50 fee will be assessed per occurrence.
- Overcharging the device can damage the batteries. The device should never be left charging for more than 24 hours. If you are not using the device, do not leave the charger plugged in for extended periods of time.
- If you are charging the device outdoors, please make sure that the device and the charger are both protected from rain via the device cover. The charger should be placed on the foot resting area of the scooter (not on the ground) and the device cover placed over the entire scooter and charger. Water damage to the charger may require replacement and an $80 replacement fee will be assessed.
- Weekly rentals must return the device fully charged. Failure to do so will result in a $25 fee.
