You Can’t Take It With You Press Release
Chautauqua Theater Company Artistic Directors Vivienne Benesch and Ethan McSweeny are proud to announce the first full production of CTC’s 27th season: Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s high spirited comedy You Can’t Take It With You.
Stuart Margolin, most widely known for his two-time Emmy award-winning role as Angel in television’s long-running “The Rockford Files,” returns to CTC for his fifth season following 2008’s landmark performance as Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s masterpiece Death of a Salesman. CHQ audiences have thrilled to other of Margolin’s performances as well in featured roles in: Ah, Wilderness! The Cherry Orchard and All My Sons.
“I’m so pleased to be coming back,” says Margolin. “I found a second wind of artistic fervor at CHQ. And then over time I came to realize that it is artistic nourishment for all involved: actors, directors, writers, designers, crew and audience. What a delight.”
This season Margolin returns as Grandpa Vanderhoff in You Can’t Take It With You. Grandpa quit his job 35 years ago and hasn’t paid taxes since. And that’s just the start of the family’s peculiarities. In this production, Margolin reunites with OBIE Award winner and CHQ veteran Kristine Nielson to bring this Pulitzer prize-winning, classic comedy to life on the Bratton stage.
Kristine Nielsen has a depth of experience on and off Broadway. Among her recent Broadway performances are: To Be Or Not To Be, 2008; Les Liaisons Dangereues, 2008; A Streetcar Named Desire, 2005.
Margolin and Nielsen will be joined by a cast that includes includes Stephen Pelinsky, Matt Bradford Sullivan, and long-time CTC guest artists Carol Halstead and Andrew Weems, seen together in CTC’s 2008 production of Reckless.
“We’ve assembled an extraordinary group for this production,” says McSweeny, “some of the best comic actors performing on the American stage today. And happily we are able to give You Can’t Take it With You its due with one of the longest runs we’ve had at CTC: from July 14th all the way through to the 25th.”
Bensech sounds the keynote theme for the production: “We are blessed with an extraordinary play, which, with its themes of family and finances and fun feels as fresh and contemporary as if it were written yesterday. It is truly theater for our times.”
You Can’t Take It With You director Paul Mullins has worked at many of the most prestigious regional theaters in the country, including The Studio Theater and the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Portland Stage and The Old Globe. He leads a distinguished creative team that includes CTC Veterans Lee Savage (sets) and Alixandra Gage Englund (costumes), as well as first-time Chautauquan Michael Giannitti (lights).
Additional productions of the 2010 CTC season include: An Incident, a New Play Workshop, beginning July 29, and Macbeth running from August 13 through August 21.
