Dear Chautauquans,
As the autumn leaves finish their descent onto Bestor Plaza, it signifies our annual ritual of Thanksgiving in the United States. This year feels especially momentous, as we remember the events celebrating the 150th anniversary of our beloved Chautauqua Institution.
For a century and a half, Chautauqua has been a place where minds and hearts converge, where intellectual curiosity, artistic brilliance, and spiritual growth come together. This milestone reminds us of the enduring strength of our community—built on a legacy of connection, learning, and shared purpose. For that and so much more, we are grateful.
It strikes me that many of us will be gathering around our Thanksgiving tables with some of the same friends and family with whom we cherish and enjoy traditions each summer at Chautauqua. The idea that thousands of Chautauquans will sit down together in the spirit of Thanksgiving paints a picture of the interconnectedness of our lives and the impact we make as individuals, families, friends, and as a cohesive community that perpetually aspires to make a positive difference in the world.
I am filled with profound gratitude for each of you — our patrons, staff, volunteers, and supporters — whose unwavering dedication has sustained Chautauqua through triumphs and challenges alike. Together, we have not only preserved a rich heritage but have also charted a path forward, ensuring that this special place continues to inspire future generations.
Our founders knew that for Chautauqua to thrive we must always welcome new ideas and faces to Chautauqua. It is that mixture of history and openness that allows Chautauqua’s mission to thrive each year and for years to come.
This season of Thanksgiving offers us an opportunity to reflect on the journey that brought us here and to look ahead with hope. Let us celebrate the bonds we share and the memories we’ve created within these sacred grounds, while carrying the spirit of unity and gratitude into the next chapter of our story.
As we give thanks, let us also extend our hearts to those in need, to communities around the world affected by conflict and hardship, and continue to strive for peace and understanding.
Wishing you all a joyous Thanksgiving, filled with love, reflection, and the enduring spirit of Chautauqua.
With gratitude,
President Michael E. Hill
