You don’t have to be an avid outdoor enthusiast to appreciate the beauty of Slovenia’s magnificent landscape. Though these cultural cornerstones are most known for their natural beauty, each is full of untold secrets that lurk just beneath their surface.
Baby Dragons of the Postojna Cave
Within the dark, damp interior of the Postojna Cave dwells a pale skinned, red tufted, long tailed, four-legged, snakelike, eyeless aquatic beast — a baby dragon. Since the 17th century the people of Karst reported sightings of offspring of a ferocious dragon lurking in Postojna Cave. Better known today as olms, these “baby dragons” can be found in very few places in the world, with Slovenia and its Postojna Cave serving as their principal habitat. Join Chautauqua Travels as you explore the spectacular cave formations of Postojna, and relish in the mystery of its ancient inhabitants.
Predjama Castle: Erazem of Predjama
Nestled within the rocky cliffs of the stunning Slovenia countryside, bordering the Postojna Cave, lies the “medieval marvel,” Predjama Castle. This 13th century architectural wonder, best known for its impenetrable nature, serves a critical role in the story of murdering robber baron Erazem Lueger. On the run from the emperor’s forces, Lueger seeks refuge within the walls of the majestic Predjama Castle, using its mysterious secret tunnels to get supplies. The legend continues, describing his fight to remain sequestered in the castle, and his eventual demise, with Predjama Castle serving as the illustrious stage on which the tale was set. Visit this historic 800-year-old architectural masterpiece and bring the legend of Erazem Lueger to life in this one-of-a-kind travel experience with Chautauqua.
The Legend of Lake Bled
Science attributes the unique shape of Lake Bled to the Bohinj glacier and its conquest as it carved through the surrounding landscape, melting to fill all that that was left in its wake. But some say there is a different story. The Legend of Lake Bled tells the tale of the once vibrant mountain fairies, who inhabited a beautiful valley, and their struggle to maintain its lush grasses. Their pleas to do so fell upon the shepherds’ deaf ears. Conflict ensued, with wrath of springs and brooks unleased into the valley — filling the once lush area and forming the lake we know today and its accompanying island. Our Chautauqua Travel Trip allows you to take in the postcard perfect views of both Lake Bled and Bled Island, and the history that surrounds both.
The Zlatorog Legend of the Julian Alps
Known as the “Alpine Jewels,” the peaks of the Julian Alps reach elevations of 8202 feet (2500 meters) or more, with its highest peak at Triglav mountain. In addition to its impressive size, this mighty peak serves as the backdrop for one of Slovenia’s most noteworthy stories: The Legend of Zlatorog. The tale describes the division between the upper and lower valleys of Triglav Lakes, and the wealth, prosperity and treasure that resided with the upper valley on top of Triglav mountain. A young hunter sets out to kill the protector of the upper valley Zlatorog, seeking his golden horns as a means of payment to his girlfriend’s mother. A story of human greed and the complexity of decision making, this myth serves as a fantastical narrative that places Slovenia’s sensational scenery at its forefront. Chautauqua Travels invites you to take in this story and its morals as you experience the magnitude of these incredible mountains and surrounding valley in Triglav National Park.
