CHQ Assembly’s January 2024 Lineup
In January, we’re highlighting the 2023 Summer Assembly theme “Infrastructure: Building and Maintaining the Physical, Social and Civic Underpinnings of Society.”
Somewhere along the way, infrastructure becomes boring — the awe and joy with which a child greets the weekly garbage truck and hours spent on felt playmats of city streets give way to the “unsexy” business of routine maintenance and iterative improvements, of taxes and policy. Yet nothing remains more critical to our public lives than the evolution and safety of these systems. Join Chautauqua’s lecturers Paul M. Romer, Mike Huckabee, Christian Peele, Leslie Dewan, Amor Towles, and more as they ask whether our definition of “infrastructure” needs to be expanded. And what does the infrastructure of the future look like, which places are leading the way and how?

Notable Lectures
Amor Towles
Amor Towles’ beloved novels — translated into more than 30 languages — have each been New York Times bestsellers, collectively selling more than 6 million copies. His latest, 2021’s The Lincoln Highway, debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times bestseller list, was a “Today Show” #ReadWithJenna Book Club Pick, one of The New York Times 100 Notable Books of 2021, and The Washington Post Best Book of the Year. A propulsive, road-trip novel set in 1950s America, it is this book that Towles returns to the grounds to discuss in a joint Chautauqua Lecture Series and Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle presentation, uplifting the legacy of the first transcontinental highway in the United States and its place in both our country’s legacy and its infrastructure.
Leslie Dewan
Positioned at the forefront of the nuclear technology development renaissance, engineer and environmentalist Leslie Dewan is among the wave of young engineers adapting and improving reactor designs from the earliest days of the industry to solve modern problems. She joins the Chautauqua Lecture Series to discuss her work and the potential of nuclear energy infrastructure to power — and even save — the world.

The Rev. Christian Peele is a theologically-trained, organizational strategist whose leadership is shaped by the faith-based conviction that the world can be made whole. She has held senior roles in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, in some of the most complex organizations in the world.

Mike Huckabee joins the Chautauqua Lecture Series on July 25 during our Week Five theme “Infrastructure: Building and Maintaining the Physical, Social and Civic Underpinnings of Society” to share his experience as a state chief executive, responsible for a vast web of governmental infrastructure that supports the lives and livelihoods of millions of constituents.
