Chautauqua Institution Announces $8 Million Dollar Gift for Bellinger Hall Renovations
Chautauqua Institution is proud to announce an extraordinary contribution from esteemed benefactors and longtime Chautauquans Craig and Cathrine Greene. Their latest philanthropic gesture of $8 million will facilitate much needed enhancements to Bellinger Hall, ensuring its vitality for future generations.
The Greene family’s unwavering commitment to Chautauqua’s legacy is underscored by this substantial donation, bringing their total contributions to $13.3 million over the past year.
This recent donation of $8 million is in addition to a $5.3 million multi-faceted commitment, which included gifts to both Chautauqua Institution and the Chautauqua Foundation. That donation supported a wide range of capital projects and strategic initiatives that are core components of Boundless, A Campaign for Chautauqua. The initial gift also included support for the renovation of Bellinger Hall.
This $8 million gift is earmarked specifically for improvements to Bellinger Hall.
Key improvements include:
- Installation of air conditioning in all dormitory rooms, each equipped with individual thermostats, slated for completion before the 2025 season.
- Refurbishment of all bedrooms and bathrooms.
- Post-2025 renovations to common areas featuring: a new entrance; upgraded dining and food service areas; and modernized kitchens, meeting and practice rooms.
“Craig and Cathrine Greene’s generosity exemplifies the very spirit of Chautauqua,” said Chautauqua Institution President Michael E. Hill. “Their additional $8 million gift to renovate Bellinger Hall is not only a testament to their unwavering commitment to our community, but also a critical investment in the future of Chautauqua and, in particular, our student artists who breath so much life into our Summer Assembly Season. These enhancements will ensure Bellinger Hall remains a cornerstone of our Institution, offering contemporary and comfortable accommodations that meet the needs of our students and guests. We are profoundly grateful for the Greene family’s continued support and dedication to our mission.”
The renovations are integral to Chautauqua’s strategic plan, “150 Forward,” which was put into place to deliver a premier experience for visitors and establish Chautauqua as a distinguished, year-round destination for another 150 years. The enhancements to Bellinger Hall are pivotal in achieving these objectives, providing contemporary and comfortable accommodations that align with the expectations of today’s students and guests.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Craig and Cathrine Greene for their generosity and commitment to the future of Chautauqua Institution.
