Pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk to Replace Daniil Trifonov for Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra June 27 Concert
Performance Opens 90th Anniversary Season, 2019 Russian Festival
Chautauqua Institution today announced that celebrated pianist Daniil Trifonov will be unable to join the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra for its Opening Night performance on June 27, 2019.
A representative for Trifonov shared the following statement:
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Daniil Trifonov is unable to leave Europe as planned to fulfill his commitment to Chautauqua. He withdraws with sadness because he has really looked forward to making music in such a special and beautiful place. He looks forward to a return engagement in the near future.
Trifonov will be replaced on the CSO calendar by another world-renowned pianist, Chautauqua-favorite Alexander Gavrylyuk, who will join the orchestra for a performance of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, op. 43. The Opening Night concert, which also serves as the first of three programs in the CSO’s 2019 Russian Festival, will also feature Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, op. 32, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 45.
Gavrylyuk will also keep his previously scheduled performance with the CSO on July 2, his solo recital on July 10, and his chamber music performance with violinist Aaron Berofsky on June 29.
“We regret that Mr. Trifonov was forced to cancel his Chautauqua date, but we look forward to inviting him for a future performance,” said Deborah Sunya Moore, vice president of performing and visual arts. “We are simultaneously delighted that Alexander Gavrylyuk has accepted our invitation to perform with Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. As he has long been a favorite soloist and now also the artistic advisor for our Piano Program, it feels particularly celebratory to launch our 90th anniversary season with an artist who is so beloved by Chautauqua and by the world.”

The Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2019, was founded in 1929 and today continues its legacy as the center of musical life at Chautauqua Institution.
