Lendl to Headline August 3–4, 2021 Tennis Clinic at Chautauqua Tennis Center
CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — Chautauqua Institution today announced it is joining forces with tennis legend Ivan Lendl as an initial step toward expanding the famed location’s tennis profile and activities. Lendl, the three-time U.S. Open champion and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, headlines a two-day tennis clinic at the Chautauqua Tennis Center on Aug. 3-4, 2021.
“We are excited to team with Ivan Lendl to further increase Chautauqua’s commitment to tennis,” said Emily Morris, Chautauqua Institution senior vice president and chief brand officer. “Tennis is a highlight of our expansive recreational offerings, and we are thrilled work with Mr. Lendl to expand our program so that tennis may one day be among Chautauqua’s key brand drivers.”
Lendl won eight major singles championships (three U.S. Opens, three French Opens and two Australian Opens), was No. 1 in the world for 270 weeks and won a total of 94 individual titles in his storied career. He has also established himself as one of the best coaches in the world having guided Andy Murray to two Wimbledon titles and the world No. 1 ranking.
“I fell in love with tennis when I was a young kid. It has everything to challenge players of all skill levels. I am looking forward to working with Chautauqua to establish a tennis program that can provide a combination of performance, fitness, on- and off-court education, and a love of the game,” Lendl said. “Chautauqua provides a great environment for all of that.”
The inaugural Ivan Lendl Tennis Clinic will take place at the Chautauqua Tennis Center on Aug. 3–4, 2021 and will include instruction by Lendl and five USTA pros, Q-and-A sessions with Lendl, a VIP reception and more.
ABOUT TENNIS AT CHAUTAUQUA
Tennis has a long and rich tradition at Chautauqua Institution. Originally introduced by co-founder Bishop John Vincent in 1878, the first lawn tennis court was set up along Chautauqua’s lakefront. The Chautauqua Tennis Center, conveniently located directly behind the Turner Community Center on Route 394, boasts eight state-of-the-art, fast-dry courts. Using the patented “Hydro-Grid” system, the clay-like playing surface is kept uniformly moist by a sub-surface irrigation system. The result is a court that is consistent, gives a true bounce, is gentle on the feet and legs of players, and drains exceptionally well, allowing for a quick return to play even after heavy rain. Two of the courts are illuminated for night play.
ABOUT CHAUTAUQUA INSTITUTION

As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue.
