This week, turn Chautauqua into your playground. In this idyllic, safe setting, kids can be kids, and parents and grandparents can get in on the fun, too. Explore the grounds on foot or by bike, take to the lake for swimming, kayaking, and more.

The Art of Play • July 7–14, 2018

Play is critically important in the social and emotional development of a child, but research also tells us that play shouldn’t end when we grow up. This week, we take a multigenerational approach to play, to the act of instructive fun. How does play help people of all ages build community, keep our minds sharp, and strengthen the relationships with those we love? From the free-spirited, free-form play of youth to the intellectual challenge of puzzles and games, to the creative problem-solving exhibited in board rooms, we examine the science behind the importance of play, the changing culture of play and gaming, and the innovative work aimed at improving our personal and professional lives through play.

Youth Programs

Children’s School • Boys’ and Girls’ Club • Club Plus
From preschool to day camp, from enrichment classes to sports instruction, and from reading to experiences in science and the arts, our programs for youth offer opportunities to explore the Chautauqua experience. Kids are encouraged to grow in independence, make choices, take responsibility and celebrate family time, all within a safe and supportive community.

New in 2018! Club Plus joins the traditional Boys’ and Girls’ Club day camp experience with an interdisciplinary curriculum in the arts and sciences to inspire and bolster academic curiosity.

Unique place, in the best way

5 of 5 stars on Trip Advisor •  Reviewed July 12, 2017

I always struggle to explain CHQ to people. The institution has a beautiful campus - the houses are adorable, the shops and different buildings are all so architecturally different. Right on the water, complete with lighthouse, it's adorable. But the real gem are the lectures. I've never been in a group of people so motivated to learn and be engaged. The classes they offer throughout the week are amazing. I couldn't recommend coming to this place more.
