Chautauqua welcomes applications from all eligible musicians with no preference to racial or ethnic origins, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disability, or age. Admission is by audition only (either live or recorded). 100% of tuition is covered by scholarship for all instrumental students. Many of our larger scholarships also cover room and board.

Deadline: February 1, 2021

Admission decisions and scholarship awards are made by March 1 for the Instrumental Program. Admission results will be emailed to the address on the student's application. No decision will be released until the applicant’s file is complete and the non-refundable application fee of $60 is paid.

Audition Instructions

Due to the global pandemic, only recorded auditions are accepted for the instrumental program in 2021. Videos must include the repertoire requirements listed below and be uploaded with your application on Slideroom. Mo. Muffitt personally evaluates all the auditions and makes all the admissions and scholarship decisions.

Open Positions

Because we had to cancel the in-person Chautauqua School of Music in 2020, all students enrolled for 2020 were given the option to defer their attendance to summer 2021. Based on student response, the following options are available to all potential applicants in 2021:

  • Limited Openings – this section is not filled and there are opportunities for new students.
  • Alternate List – in the event that a space opens up, we will select someone from our short alternate lists.

Below is the most up to date availability for all sections:

Flute – Alternate List Positions Only
Oboe - Alternate List Positions Only
Clarinet - Alternate List Positions Only
Bassoon - Alternate List Positions Only
Horn - Alternate List Positions Only
Trumpet - Alternate List Positions Only
Trombone – Limited Openings
Bass Trombone – Limited Openings
Tuba - Alternate List Positions Only
Harp – Alternate List Positions Only
Percussion – Alternate List Positions Only
Violin – Limited Openings
Viola – Limited Openings
Cello – Limited Openings
Bass – Limited Openings

Scholarships are awarded only to students enrolled for, and who will participate fully in, the entire program.

In 2020, the Chautauqua Institution awarded direct scholarship aid to 100% of the students in the Instrumental Program.

While we do offer TUITION FREE scholarships, it is helpful to fill out the financial aid form if you want to be considered for additional aid to cover room/board.

Applicants for full-term programs must be enrolled in or recently graduated from music studies at the time of application. Professional musicians are not eligible for admission or financial aid.

Recorded Auditions

String applicants: a movement from a standard concerto and two to three suggested orchestral excerpts.

Winds and brass: a solo piece and two to three suggested orchestral excerpts.

Percussion: entire list of repertoire included on the link below.

Please apply online at Chautauqua.slideroom.com

Deadline for all recorded auditions is February 1, 2021.

Your recordings should be separate uploads (solo piece and then the excerpts). For the excerpts you may select what to include, we do not have any required portions although most applicants prepare the “standard” selections on each. Please also include a short video introduction of yourself, telling us who you are, where you study, your current education level, where you are from, etc.
