“In jazz music, improvisation is the musical equivalent to writing a story,” says saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jeffrey Scot Wills. “You have to be skilled in the language you’re speaking to weave (or ‘smyth’) everything together.” From this concept, RHYTHMSMYTH was forged — an ensemble whose name pays homage to master smiths of all types — from a skilled crafter (blacksmith), to an inventive writer (wordsmith), to the Smyth sewing process still used in modern bookbinding.

The RHYTHMSMYTH collaborative contains its own trove of ‘smyths’ — Jeffrey Scot Wills has performed and recorded with stars including Bela Fleck, Donna Summer, Engelbert Huperdinck, and Grammy-award winning vocal group Take 6. He is joined by Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra (CSO) principal percussionist Brian Kushmaul, CSO section percussionist Pedro Fernandez, United States Marine Band principal bassist Eric Sabo, and Washing D.C. pianist Tony Nalker. All five jazz musicians seamlessly weave together new and inventive arrangements of symphonic music’s greatest hits including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man — recognizable yet reworked, reharmonized and reinvented as only RHYTHMSMYTH can.
