July 13–August 7, 2020

Chautauqua Institution School of Music will be presenting a 4-week intensive online program for the summer of 2020. The Chautauqua Online School of Music will present cherished aspects of the traditional School of Music program alongside new programming designed to explore and take advantage of the remote learning environment.

The Chautauqua Online School of Music is structured to provide key elements of musical development along with innovative approaches to community-building to inspire student growth as artists this summer, and beyond. Each week will feature themes relevant to artist development, including Innovation and the 21st Century Musician, Artistic Development and Personal Wellness, Arts Career Development and Enhancement, and Conversations with CHQ Distinguished Alumni.

The School’s expanded curriculum offerings will include:

  • Weekly Private Lessons and Studio Classes with faculty and guest artists
  • Keynote Speakers — including J.Y. Song, defining the value of artistic innovation
  • Career-building Seminars designed for the 21st-century musician
  • Interview Spotlights with faculty, guest artists, and alumni
  • Orchestral Excerpts and Audition Masterclass Sessions for instrumental students
  • Diction and Repertoire Coachings and Online Productions for voice students
  • Wellness Events for all students
  • Access to all of Chautauqua’s Online Offerings, with featured lectures by prominent speakers and performances from all disciplines

Along with the above initiatives, the program also seeks to maintain some of the unique elements of study at Chautauqua Institution, including developing peer support, cross-disciplinary work, and the global, progressive mindset for which the Institution is known.

Nothing can replace a summer on the historic Chautauqua grounds, but the Institution's resources extend well beyond the physical elements. The 2020 Chautauqua Online School of Music captures those elements, continuing the tradition of community-building while expanding into the digital space to create an extraordinary experience for students.

“In this program we have harnessed the extraordinary assets of the Chautauqua Institution and its Music School faculty to bring world-class professional training right to your home. This virtual learning environment allows us to connect you with many of the top professionals in the music world, address important and timely issues, and build a virtual version of Chautauqua’s unique community, all while guiding your personal artistic growth through the summer. "
