“Off the Walls” Exhibition – June 23–August 20

“Off the Walls” exhibition runs June 23–August 20. Opening reception June 23, 3-5pm. “Off the Walls” is an exhibition featuring a dozen contemporary artists who create small sculptures, and are at the peak of their careers, showing nationally and internationally. As the title implies, all works will be hung from the ceiling or displayed on pedestals. Works in wood, glass, clay, metal, and concrete will be featured. This exhibition is generously sponsored by Brenda and Larry Thompson. Curated by Judy Barie.

Ashley Eliza Williams, born in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia, makes work about interspecies communication and alternative languages found in the natural world. “In the Garden” Exhibition – July 24-Aug 21

“In the Garden” exhibition runs July 24-Aug 21. Opening Reception July 24, 3-5pm. Inspired by what we learn from the garden, this exhibition reflects the complicated histories and often tenuous futures of flowers and food. It also digs at our relationship to them, as those charged with tending the garden. Through media ranging from still life painting to glass pâte de verre, these works tackle diverse subjects such as climate change, indigenous plant knowledge, growth/decay, and tulip mania. Join us in Strohl Art Center on July 24 from 5 – 6pm for a panel discussion with exhibiting artists. This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Kay Hardesty Logan Foundation. Bishop Michael Curry

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry is presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church. At the church’s 78th General Convention in June 2015, he was elected to a nine-year term in this role and installed in November of that year; he serves as The Episcopal Church’s chief pastor, spokesperson, and president and chief executive officer.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Curry has been a prophetic leader, particularly in the areas of racial reconciliation, climate change, evangelism, immigration policy, and marriage equality. The animating vision and message of his ministry is Jesus of Nazareth and his way of radical, sacrificial love, and he regularly reminds Episcopalians they are “the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.”

Bishop Curry was ordained a priest in 1978 and served parishes in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland until his 2000 election as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He graduated with high honors from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. Bishop Curry is the author of five books and a regular guest on national and international media outlets.

Art in the Park

Hosted by the Friends of CVA, Art in the Park is an open art fair with 70+ vendors held in Miller Park, showcasing art by members of the Chautauqua community, artists-in-residence from the School of Art, and artisans from the region around Chautauqua Institution. Items for sale include ceramics, paintings, prints, Chautauqua-themed trinkets, pieces made of up-cycled materials, homemade soaps, hand-dyed silk clothing, organic cosmetics, embellished handbags and fine jewelry. Art in the Park markets are always planned for Sundays, when admission to the grounds is free, so the markets can be accessible for Institution residents and members of the surrounding community alike.

Children’s School is open for free play! We would like to extend a special invitation to our families with children under 2 years old for this special afternoon play session but welcome all to join!

Children are required to be accompanied by an adult or caregiver (16+) for this event.

On Sundays from 1-2 p.m., families and community members are invited to tour Children’s School, Group One, and Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Squonk: Brouhaha

Squonk creates joyful, boisterous outdoor spectacles by fusing fantastical visual design, playful staging, and high-energy original music. Led by Co-Artistic Directors Jackie Dempsey and Steve O’Hearn, Squonk presents Brouhaha, a riotous romp featuring the Squonkcordion, an enormous musical instrument the audience gets to play. The New York Times called Squonk “ingenious, hallucinatory and hypnotic.” Experience the joy of community and the power of live music in this immersive outdoor spectacle bursting with rollicking music and dazzling imagery.

Squonk will help Chautauqua celebrate its sesquicentennial with music, puppetry, and performance outdoors on a pop-up stage in Bestor Plaza. On Sunday, watch them perform; on Monday join them for a street puppet-making workshop (times and locations TBA), and on Tuesday, celebrate Chautauqua with a birthday edition of Brouhaha: participatory entertainment for kids and adults alike. Performances are 30 minutes with a 30 minute backstage tour following.

Undine is a powerful and successful business owner basking in the glory of all her accomplishments. She has everything from wealth to love and a fabulous wardrobe to match, but life has a wicked sense of humor. The man she believes is the love of her life pulls the ultimate disappearing act, stealing everything and leaving her pregnant and penniless. Plummeting down the precarious ladder of society, Undine finds herself grappling with the disintegration of her once-perfect life as she is forced to return to her humble roots in Brooklyn and the family she once abandoned. Can Undine manifest her future without acknowledging her past?

Fabulation is a sharp-witted satirical comedy that takes us from riches to rags, through twists and turns, and reveals the unexpected joys within chaos.

This production includes adult content—depictions of drug use and harsh language—and may not be suitable for youth 13 and under.

Bishop Michael Curry

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry is presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church. At the church’s 78th General Convention in June 2015, he was elected to a nine-year term in this role and installed in November of that year; he serves as The Episcopal Church’s chief pastor, spokesperson, and president and chief executive officer.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Curry has been a prophetic leader, particularly in the areas of racial reconciliation, climate change, evangelism, immigration policy, and marriage equality. The animating vision and message of his ministry is Jesus of Nazareth and his way of radical, sacrificial love, and he regularly reminds Episcopalians they are “the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.”

Bishop Curry was ordained a priest in 1978 and served parishes in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland until his 2000 election as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He graduated with high honors from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. Bishop Curry is the author of five books and a regular guest on national and international media outlets.

Dacher Keltner

Dacher Keltner’s research focuses on the biological and evolutionary origins of compassion, awe, love and beauty; and power, social class and inequality. A professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Berkeley Social Interaction Lab, he is a leading scholar in the study of emotion and the author of Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How it Can Transform Your Life. It is this book that will frame his Chautauqua Lecture Series debut as he opens a week dedicated to “Wonder and Awe — A Week Celebrating Chautauqua’s Sesquicentennial.”

Keltner serves as the faculty director of the Berkeley Greater Good Science Center and in 2020, along with Michael Pollan and others, co-founded the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. In addition, Keltner is chief scientific advisor at Hume AI, host of the podcast “The Science of Happiness,” has collaborated on projects at Facebook and Google, and served as a scientific consultant for Pixar’s film “Inside Out.”

Keltner is also the author of The Power Paradox: How We Gain and Lose Influence; Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life; and The Compassionate Instinct: The Science of Human Goodness. He is also co-editor of The Gratitude Project: How the Science of Thankfulness Can Rewire Our Brains for Resilience, Optimism, and the Greater Good.

A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Keltner earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his doctorate from Stanford University.

Amy Butler

Pastor Amy Butler believes deeply that courageous communities of people who live with tenacious love can change the world. She currently serves as Designated Pastor at the Community Church of Honolulu and lives in Hawai’i, where she grew up. Before that, Amy served for five years as the seventh Senior Minister and first woman at the helm of The Riverside Church in the City of New York. She holds degrees from Baylor University, the International Baptist Theological Seminary, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Amy’s professional ministry career began as the director of a homeless shelter for women in New Orleans, Louisiana; she later became Associate Pastor of Membership and Mission at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in the city of New Orleans. In 2003, Butler was called to the position of Senior Minister of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.’s Chinatown, where she was also the first woman to lead that historic congregation. She is the author of Beautiful and Terrible Things, a deeply personal memoir about the nature of faith, the inevitability of doubt, and the importance of radical love in facing all the beautiful and terrible things that happen in our lives.

Chautauqua Chamber Music: Ivalas Quartet

The Ivalas Quartet, founded in 2017 at the University of Michigan, champions BIPOC voices in classical music by spotlighting composers like Jessie Montgomery and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Notable performances include Carnegie Hall, where they premiered George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, and collaborations with Lara Downes for Carlos Simon’s Warmth From Other Suns. Through the Sphinx Organization, Ivalas has presented educational programming in the Metro Detroit area, with an emphasis on community engagement in schools with Black and Latinx communities. Currently, as Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Juilliard School, they continue their mission of musical diversity and education, coaching student groups and collaborating with institutions like the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Recognized for their dedication, they’ve won prizes at competitions and held residencies at prestigious venues like Caramoor and Carnegie Hall.

Music School Festival Orchestra

Comprised of top-tier students from conservatories and universities in the U.S. and abroad, Music School Festival Orchestra members participate in a variety of musical activities during their summers at Chautauqua including chamber music and private lessons along with their meticulous orchestral training. Alumni from the MSFO can be heard in many of the world’s top orchestras and chamber ensembles and can be found on music faculties worldwide. Bishop Michael Curry

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry is presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church. At the church’s 78th General Convention in June 2015, he was elected to a nine-year term in this role and installed in November of that year; he serves as The Episcopal Church’s chief pastor, spokesperson, and president and chief executive officer.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Curry has been a prophetic leader, particularly in the areas of racial reconciliation, climate change, evangelism, immigration policy, and marriage equality. The animating vision and message of his ministry is Jesus of Nazareth and his way of radical, sacrificial love, and he regularly reminds Episcopalians they are “the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.”

Bishop Curry was ordained a priest in 1978 and served parishes in North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland until his 2000 election as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. He graduated with high honors from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. Bishop Curry is the author of five books and a regular guest on national and international media outlets.
