The Sigma Alpha Iota Philanthropies, Inc. Competition rotates annually among the three departments, this year (2017) the competition will be held within the Instrumental Department. Winner receives $1,000 and performs as soloist with the Music School Festival Orchestra in the summer of 2018.

Guidelines 2017: 

2017 SAI Repertoire 

Music School Festival Orchestra students will be emailed a SAI application on June 1, 2017. Students wishing to enter the competition should email their applications to info@chautauquamusic.com no later 6 pm, Monday, June 27. Your CHQ teachers will be notified accordingly.

June 30 at 10:30 a.m., Lenna Hall | preliminary round, winds & percussion, no accompanists, private event.
June 30 at 2 p.m., McKnight Hall | preliminary round, strings, no accompanists, private event.
July 6 at 2 p.m., Fletcher Hall | 2nd round with accompanists, open to public
July 12 at 2 p.m., Fletcher Hall | final round with accompanists, open to public 

Note: Accompanists will only be involved in the second and final rounds. In the preliminary and second rounds students will only need to perform up to a maximum of 10 minutes duration from sections selected at the student's discretion.  It is anticipated, but not mandatory, that most candidates will perform from memory. In the final round, July 12, students will be expected to know and perform the entire work.  

Judges will be selected from faculty members of the Chautauqua Music Festival and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.

The preliminary string round will be judged by string faculty. The preliminary winds & percussion round will be wind/percussion faculty. Winners of each round will combine and advance to the second round.

The second round will be judged by a mix of CHQ string and wind faculty.

The final round will judged by the Music School Festival, Music Director, a member of the string faculty and a member of the wind faculty. A teacher with a student performing in the final round would not be selected to be a final competition judge.
